3.0.8 Elemental Shaman PVE-Raiding Talent Build 57/14/0

21 01 2009

Now that we’ve been overhauled by 3.0.8 (and, very much for the better!), it’s time to revise where those talent points should be spent for an Elemental spec. Admittedly, it appears to be very cookie-cutter in most regards; the only real exceptions that I can see would involve something fight-specific, like speccing into Earth’s Grasp for Gluth or similar. So, here’s my PVE Raid spec opinion!

Elemental Talents:

Convection 5/5

Reduces the mana cost of your Shock, Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, and Lava Burst spells by 10%.

Cheaper spells on all counts. Mana isn’t going to be much of an issue for you, and this is part of the reason why.

Concussion 5/5

Increases the damage done by your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Lava Burst and Shock spells by 5%.

This represents a 5% damage gain to almost your entire damage rotation. Essential.

Call of Flame 3/3

Increases the damage done by your Fire Totems by 15%, and damage done by your Lava Burst spell by 6%.

I could care less about any Fire Totem that isn’t named “Totem of Wrath”. However, Lava Burst is another story. It’s only fired once every 9 seconds, but it’s a big hitter. Spend here and win.

Elemental Focus 1/1

After landing a critical strike with a Fire, Frost, or Nature damage spell, you enter a Clearcasting state. The Clearcasting state reduces the mana cost of your next 2 damage or healing spells by 40%.

Now more than ever, with the changes to Elemental Oath. The mana savings alone are a good reason to take this, but the 10% bonus damage afforded by Elemental Oath makes it crazy good.

Elemental Fury 5/5

Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Searing, Magma, and Fire Nova Totems and your Fire, Frost, and Nature spells by 100%.

3.0.8 is making Elemental even more crit-intensive (and dependant) than before. Take full advantage of that extra damage with this talent.

Eye of the Storm 3/3

Reduces the pushback suffered from damaging attacks while casting Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Lava Burst and Hex spells by 70%.

Conceivably could be cut out and replaced if you have Concentration Aura available a lot, but really – there aren’t too many places where the points would be better spent for a Raider. Don’t depend on another class to keep your DPS constant and spec it to be safe.

Storm Reach 2/2

Increases the range of your Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning spells by 6 yards, and increases the radius of your Thunderstorm spell by 20%.

Less of an issue than it used to be, but still very useful to have that extra reach. The AOE increase on Thunderstorm is nice for knocking the trash around, too.

Call of Thunder 1/1

Increases the critical strike chance of your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Thunderstorm spells by an additional 5%.

Given the importance of crit in order to synergize with the talent changes, you absolutely must take this.

Unrelenting Storm 3/3

Regenerate mana equal to 12% of your Intellect every 5 sec, even while casting.

This is a great change. Not only was mana regeneration great before, now it gets 2% better (~16-18 MP5ish for Naxx gear) for 2 less talent points. Take this, and then laugh at everyone else that goes OOM on an endurance fight while you still have 90% of your bar left after 7 minutes of chain casting.

Storm, Earth and Fire 3/3

Reduces the cooldown of your Chain Lightning spell by 2.5 sec, your Wind Shock and Earth Shock’s range is increased by 5 yards and the periodic damage done by your Flame Shock is increased by 60%.

Thats a lot of buffing for 3 talent points. This makes it possible to use Chain Lightning twice between Lava Bursts at times, and the amplified Flame Shock damage is also welcome.

Elemental Precision 3/3

Increases your chance to hit with Fire, Frost, and Nature spells by 3% and reduces the threat caused by Fire, Frost, and Nature spells by 30%.

One of the more essential talents here. It’s not very easy, even with Tier Gear, to load enough +hit into your gear until well into 25 Man Naxx or Malygos. Help yourself out with this, and if you do have a lot of +hit in your gear already? It’s that much sooner that you can re-gem it for more crit!

Lightning Mastery 5/5

Reduces the cast time of your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, and Lava Burst spells by 0.5 sec.

Again, essential. Combined with a significant amount of haste, this is what allows you to stuff 4 Lightning Bolts and a Flame Shock in between Lava Bursts.

Elemental Mastery 1/1

When activated, this spell increases the Shaman’s critical strike chance by 20% for 30 seconds.

Even better than the original tooltip, you can now strategically set 30-second high-crit windows for yourself . This is money when coupled with Bloodlust, and for fights with short DPS windows followed by periods of non-DPS (like Heigan and Sapphiron).

Elemental Oath 2/2

Your spell critical strikes grant your party or raid members within 100 yards Elemental Oath, increasing spell critical strike chance by 5%.Increases spell damage done by the Shaman by 5/10% while Elemental Focus Clearcasting is active.  Lasts 15 seconds.

Even if the 5% crit gain can be overwritten by Moonkin Aura, the changes that it stacks to Clearcasting are a major DPS contributor, especially in light of the fact that the Clearcasting buff is frequently up. This is also why the spec is even more crit-intensive now, because if you can chain-crit, your DPS is going to be bonkers.

Lightning Overload 5/5

Gives your Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning spells a 20% chance to cast a second, similar spell on the same target at no additional cost that causes half damage and no threat

Just another DPS amplifier. Especially nice as it costs no mana, generates no threat, and uses no Global Cooldown.

Totem of Wrath 1/1

Summons a Totem of Wrath with 5 health at the feet of the caster. The totem increases the damage done by spells and effects by 280 for all party and raid members, and increases the critical strike chance of spells and effects by 3% against all enemies within 40 yards. Lasts 5 min.

Certainly one of the defining characteristics of the build, and one of the better tools that you bring to a group as it augments all casters, be they DPS or Healing.

Lava Flows 3/3

Increases the range of your Flame Shock by 5 yards, and increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Lava Burst spell by an additional 24%.

The Flame Shock range buff is not to be overlooked here, but the real money in this talent is the Lava Burst damage. Augment that hammer and take it.

Shamanism 5/5

Your Lightning Bolt spell gains an additional 10% and your Lava Burst gains an additional 20% of your bonus damage effects.

The new hotness. Adding this into the build amplifies Elemental damage by a lot, and is a must-have.

Thunderstorm 1/1

You call down a bolt of lightning, energizing you and damaging nearby enemies within 10 yards. Restores 5% mana to you and deals 566 to 644 Nature damage to all nearby enemies, knocking them back 20 yards

Now more than ever, you’ll want to take this talent. The pushback effect can be annoying, but there is now a glyph available that trades off that effect for more mana return. If it is well-managed, the pushback can be very useful, though once you get used to using it to throw a target back to a tank, or on mobs like Gluth’s Zombie Chow, where buying a few seconds more worth of burn time is huge. I like to drop it when I’m on the run for things like Thaddius (running between polarities) and Loatheb (DPS + mana retention) as well.

Enhancement Talents:

Ancestral Knowledge 5/5

Increases your intellect by 10%

With its first-tier availability and major stat boost, I’m pretty sure that every Shaman build has this now.

Thundering Strikes 5/5

Improves your chance to get a critical strike with all spells and attacks by 5%

Again, the new talents are crit dependant in large part. Maximize your return with this talent, and open up access to the third tier of the tree as well.

Shamanistic Focus 1/1

Reduces the mana cost of your Shock spells by 45%

While mana isn’t going to be a huge issue at this point, this is yet more savings for you as you’ll be using shock spells in your regular rotation. If you convert the mana saved into an MP5 figure, it’s outrageous, even greater than having another Water Shield if you’re casting every cooldown.

Elemental Weapons 3/3

Increases the damage caused by your Windfury Weapon effect by 40% increases the spell damage on your Flametongue Weapon by 30% and increases the bonus healing on your Earthliving Weapon by 30%

The final step towards maxxing out your DPS, as this is a weapon buff that you should have up at all times anyways (especially if you have glyphed for it).

…and there you have it. Is there some flexibility in it? I suppose so, as different Raiders will have different preferences. Really, though, most (if not all) of what was left on the table can be tabbed as either PvP oriented, or non-contributing in a Raid environment. I guess that’s the great trade-off for our newfound power – we’re destined to be as cookie-cutter as BM Hunters and Combat Rogues! If that’s the only negative, though, I’ll take it.

I’ve stated in here that the build is crit-dependant, and this is very true. Gem more towards that end than spellpower, assuming that your +hit is sufficient as you will see a far greater return on a point-by-point basis, both in buff uptimes and DPS output, if you stack crit.Ideally, you should be shooting for 25% or better, self-buffed and before consumables – at least into the 20’s.

Crit is important for two primary reasons. The obvious one is raw damage, as the exponential multipliers associated with it (and various spells) cause a major differential for criticals versus regular hits. More importantly is the 10% damage bonus associated with the Clearcasting buff. In simplest terms, if you can keep the Clearcasting buff up all of the time, you’ll be doing 10% more than if you didn’t. Thus, with Raid buffs and procs (and assuming that you can keep Elemental Oath refreshed continually before its 15 second timer expires), you should have Clearcasting active no less that 2/3 of the time. More crit, more active, more damage. Easy as that.

In terms of mana, you scarcely need to stack MP5. Enough of it will innately find itself on your gear that you should never have a problem, even without Replenishment being available. Water Shield, Mana Spring Totem, Unrelenting Storm, Clearcasting and Thunderstorm will all satisfy your mana needs quite well in combination. On a similar note, stacking Intellect (via gems or enchants) is also less desirable than stacking crit as your mana pool is likely to far exceed your needs on most fights.

Thank you for the great information. My Shammy is parked but these new talents really excite me and I will bring her out of mothballs soon.

Since I first got my Mage and DK raid ready and not played my Shaman for some time, could I ask if you could share your spell rotations with this new build? That would help quite helpful.

Thanks,
-dB

Heey,

The spell rotation I used on my similar build, that is super effective is; Flame Shock – Lava Burst – Lightning Bolt – Chain Lightning. Now the chain lightning is interchangeable with another lightning bolt but more or less you want to spam your lightning attacks till you have a free lava burst. Then when you have it, place a flame shock first to guarantee that you get a crit. With my build I crit over 10k with lava burst. I have to say when finding gear hit rate is super important. No hit rate means that your big hit has a greater chance of missing.

Still would like a full spell rotation example. I do realize it is not easy to come up with THE solution as haste rating tends to make it very individual. However purely theorycrafting can be good.

Im thinking something in the lines of this:

Flame Shock – Lava Burst – Chain Lightning – Lightning Bolt Lightning Bolt – Earth Shock – Chain Lightning – Lightning Bolt – Lightning Bolt

rinse and repeat…

Think that fits with the cooldowns and firing Lava Burst everytime its off CD, and ofc have Flame Shock applied everytime to ensure a nice crit…

Only thing is that every 45 secs would be smart to work in Thunderstorm for the free mana supply.

Any ideas?

It’s a great spec, but there’s 1 thing that could be improved. Having Eye of the Storm isn’t a good talent for PvE. You will (Hopefully) have a tank holding aggro at all times. A better place to put those 3 points is Improved Shields in the Enhancement tree, thus making your spec 54/17
